“The answer to future global food challenges may well come from the past” is the introduction of Euronews to their 4-minute coverage of the PROTEIN2FOOD project.

PROTEIN2FOOD has been growing quinoa and other plant protein crops that could offer healthy and sustainable alternatives to meat. On a testing farm in Caserta, Italy, Euronews interviewed the project coordinator and researchers working hands on with these crops.

Western diets have become heavily reliant on meat as a source of protein and other essential nutrients. Although quinoa and amaranth have lower levels of proteins, it is of equal quality to meat and superior quality to legumes. They are also relatively resilient to environmental stresses, and resource efficient. This makes these protein grains an eco-friendlier way to meet global protein demands.
